Do I need to file a tax return if I’m salaried and my employer already deducts tax?
Often yes. Tax deducted by your employer doesn’t automatically mean a return has been filed on your behalf — filing your own annual return is usually still required and is what gets you onto the Active Taxpayers List.
What is the difference between a "filer" and a "non-filer"?
A filer is someone who has submitted their tax return for the relevant tax year and appears on FBR’s Active Taxpayers List (ATL). Non-filers face higher withholding tax rates on many transactions, from bank withdrawals to vehicle registration.
I’m a freelancer earning in foreign currency — do I still need to pay tax in Pakistan?
Generally, yes, if you are a tax resident of Pakistan, though certain exemptions and reduced rates may apply to IT and IT-enabled services export income. Your specific situation should be reviewed individually.
I received a notice from FBR — should I be worried?
Not necessarily, but it should not be ignored. Many notices are routine requests for clarification or documentation. What matters is understanding exactly what it’s asking for and responding correctly and on time.
How is property tax different from income tax on rental income?
Property tax is typically a provincial tax on property ownership itself, while rental income you earn from a property is taxed separately as income under federal income tax rules.
Can overseas Pakistanis file a tax return remotely?
Yes. Registration, document submission, and consultations can all be handled remotely — this is one of the more common situations our team assists with.
What documents do I typically need to file an income tax return?
Commonly: CNIC, salary certificate or income summary, bank statements, and details of any assets or previous filings. Exact requirements depend on your income sources.
